In recognition of his exceptional service to the field of Middle East studies; With deep appreciation for his generous activities on behalf of the association and its members including serving on the Board of Directors and many MESA committees; His outstanding efforts to help found, sustain and expand Middle East Medievalists (MEM) and his extraordinary continuous service since 1992 as editor of Al-‘Usur al-Wusta: The Bulletin of the Middle East Medievalists;His tireless behind-the-scenes service to various presses, journals, foundations and granting agencies all to the benefit of his colleagues and the field; And for his commitment to integrating public outreach into an already full academic career. It is an honor to recognize Fred Donner, a creative, dedicated, energetic and generous colleague whose work has fostered understanding of the Middle East and enriched the lives of his students and his colleagues.
