In recognition of his exceptional service of over forty years to the field of Middle East Studies and to the discipline of linguistics; With deep appreciation for his exemplary leadership in various units of his home institution, the University of Michigan; His visionary direction of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA), which under his stewardship became the flagship program of language instruction in advanced Arabic; His pioneering contributions to the famous orange and green books of Modern Standard Arabic, which revolutionized Arabic language instruction and trained a generation of Arabists, his pedagogical materials on Kurdish, Arabic phonology and Arabic dialects; And his work on many journals and periodicals and especially for his efforts in helping to found the American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA) and his service as that organization’s founding newsletter editor and editor of its journal Al-Arabiyya. It is an honor to recognize Ernest N. McCarus, a creative, dedicated, and generous colleague whose lifelong commitment to integrating research and education has enriched so many programs of study and inspired students and colleagues.
