Eugene Rogan
St. Antony’s College, Oxford University
2000 Albert Hourani Book Award Winner
Rogan’s book, impressive in both empirical and conceptual terms, helps us understand how the Ottoman state structured and restructured itself, and how frontier inhabitants reacted to Ottoman efforts. By focusing on peripheral districts, Frontiers of the State will help us re-think the nature of Ottoman governance and the changing shape of Ottoman rule in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
